In the two weeks leading up to Winter Break SMUS Eats members each contributed their favourite holiday recipe to making this big list of recipes that each mean something to them individually.

Thanks to them you've got a whole new stack of recipes to try.

Enjoy!

Scottish Shortbread

Kate LeRoy, Grade 11

I always made these with my parents when I was little. They are fantastic with a good cup of tea! Although they might not be traditionally “holiday” themed I believe they are best at this time of year.

Candied Pecans

Delaney Arkell, Grade 11

The recipe is caramelized pecans with sugar and cinnamon. My sister used to make it during Christmas and it reminds me of the holidays. My favorite part of making it is eating them straight off the pan. They’re absolutely incredible and taste amazing!!

Krumkake

Elle Nelson, Grade 12

This is my family’s favourite Norwegian dessert! My sister and I help my grandma make it every Christmas. We usually use my great-grandma’s recipe, but the one linked here works well too!

Hash Browns with Ground Meat

Mixing potatoes with ground meat and with some flour and powder and fry it on a pan

Vanessa Tse, Grade 11

It is the first dish I learnt when I was young, taught by my aunt. My favourite part of making it is spending time with my aunt and sister. It is delicious because we all put effort and enjoyed the process of making the recipe. I learnt this dish because I know my sister can’t live without hash browns.

Best Blueberry Muffins w/ Streusel Topping

Dylan Field, Grade 11

Tastes amazing, unique in that it has a topping which makes an already good blueberry muffin recipe even better. Is also similar to what my grandmother makes, although not exact.

Peppermint Meltaways

Ivanna Wu, Grade 9

I've always loved peppermint candy canes and cookies and this dessert is a delicious combination of both!

Vegan Curry

Anna Fowler, Grade 11

It’s a really easy yummy dinner or lunch that is a good option for a meet less meal.

Christmas Crack

Julia Hepditch, Grade 11 It tastes incredible and is very easy to make. My grandma and I always make it together on Christmas. It’s a fun tradition.

No-Bake Cheesecake

Mayuko Hara, Grade 10

This is the only cake that I can bake because it’s really easy. I always bake it with my mom at home.

Pumpkin Pie

Ruby Baty, Grade 11

It’s always been a staple for my family during the holidays, so it reminds me of them and these times of the year. It’s also my favourite type of pie, and something that my mom and I often make together, which gives it a lot of additional meaning for me. I would say it’s unique because of its significance for the holidays, as it’s often closely associated with Christmas or Thanksgiving

How to Cook Tofu

Julia McDermott, Grade 12

Although a pretty simple recipe, these simple instructions have given me a love for tofu and also help me to eat less meat. I never thought that I would enjoy tofu as much as I do but this recipe has been my gateway to a slight addiction:)

Gingerbread Cookies

Alicia Singh, Grade 12

When I was a kid I always made gingerbread cookies with my family/teachers at Christmas time. I'm excited to bring this tradition back this year.

New York Cheesecake

Carina Chan, Grade 9

It's a thick cheesecake with a crust. I love eating it with my family and I usually make it with my sister. The best part is mixing all the wet ingredients with the mixer, and seeing the cream cheese, egg, etc mix together gradually. I think it's really delicious because it's so creamy.

Johnny Cake

Liam Devlin, Grade 12

It is a cornmeal bread, kind of like pancakes. I chose it because it is a classic food in my family that we always have made in large amounts and ate it on holidays and special occasions for breakfast.

Coconut Banana Muffins

My mom created it and has it written in her recipe book!

Chanel Khuu, Grade 12

This recipe is pretty basic and there are probably many like it but it is special to me because it is my mom's recipe and we have been making these muffins since I was a little girl. They are the perfect snack that can be eaten any time during the day and banana and coconut complement each other so much.

Family Favourite Mac and Cheese

Chris Lee, Grade 11

It is making mac and cheese with a crunchy part on top. I did this once when it was 3 am and I was really hungry and I am just gonna say that this was so good. I highly recommend it. I have already used this recipe once and made a fire mac and cheese. My favourite part of making it was enjoying it afterwards.

How to Make the Best Sugar Cookies

Juliette Elbers, Grade 11

I really like this recipe because it gives in great description how to make the best sugar cookies and I believe how to decorate them as well. The recipe is very simple with detailed instructions as well as there is a lovely video!

Old Fashion Easy Apple Crisp

Alyssa Chew, Grade 10

For thanksgiving I made apple crumble for my family turkey dinner. Since it was really good last time, I might make it again for my family Christmas dinner. I’m not sure if this was the same recipe but the ingredients used are pretty much the same. Apple crumble with a bit of good vanilla ice cream is the best!

Christmas Sugar Cookies with Easy Icing

Sofia Quon, Grade 11

It is just a plain sugar cookie recipe but I love to make them especially around Christmas because decorating them with my friends/family is one of my favourite activities during the holiday:)

Chilaquiles

Sofia Cruz, Grade 11

Chilaquiles are my favorite Mexican food, and i love to make them too. It. is super easy to cook and it tastes incredible.

Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies

Ava McConechy, Grade 10

My family makes these cookies every year around Christmas time!

One Pot Garlic Parmesan Pasta

Amelia Cove, Grade 10

I found it on Pinterest and I made it for my family and it was delicious :)

Candy Cane Cookies

Samantha Yee, Grade 10

I love these cookies as they are thin, crispy, and buttery. My family has a tradition of saving up candy canes throughout December and making these cookies right before Christmas!

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice-Cream Cake

Alyssa Korol-Filbey, Grade 11

This isn't the exact recipe because it was a hand written recipe in my exchange partners book, however, we made a cake very similarly to this one over a face time call last year near Christmas and although mine melted because I wasn't very patient layering stuff, it was just such a lovely experience to spend time with her even though she was in France and I was in Canada.
